Severity of asthma differs from person to person. This is because every person reacts differently to different irritants and has their own set of triggers or allergies. This makes for different treatment for each patient. Only the physician should be able to diagnose the severity of asthma in a child and provide a customized asthma self-management plan.

Learning to control asthma can last a long time. Since it requires careful and thorough observation of triggers, it depends on the frequency of asthma attacks. After familiarity of asthma severity is established, medications are taken to control symptoms and episodes. These medications can be found in the asthma management plan.

Asthma management plans usually base the guidelines on how severe the asthma is. Asthma severity has five levels: mild intermittent asthma, mild persistent asthma, moderate persistent asthma, severe persistent asthma, and acute severe asthmatic episode. The fifth level is the type of asthma that really needs medical attention. Only the first four are considered controllable.

Mild intermittent asthma usually requires no long-term controller medication but it does need short-acting medication to prevent it from escalating into mild persistent asthma. The succeeding levels of asthma severity have their corresponding increased dosage in both controller medications and rescue medications.

An asthma self-management plan is a little card with step-by-step instructions on how to deal with asthma attacks as well as the frequency and dosage of taking controller medications. It contains guidelines on what to do if the child gets an asthma attack. This plan also lists what medications are to be taken and how many times a day they needs to be taken. If the asthma worsens or if medications don't help, there may be instructions in the asthma management plan to increase dosage. Over time, the people around the asthmatic child start recognizing when to start the treatment early or when to call the doctor for help.
