Lactose intolerance is the body’s inability to process and digests lactose, this is the natural sugar located in milk and dairy products. The lactose intolerance condition originates from a lack of an enzyme present in our bodies which ordinarily digests lactose within the intestines. As a consequence, the undigested lactase starts to accumulate resulting in abdominal pain, diarrhoea and bloating. The severe symptoms manifest themselves typically within a few hours of drinking or eating products containing milk. Obviously a concern for babies, lactose intolerance is thankfully relatively rare considering higher than normal levels of this required enzyme are ordinarily present at birth.
Lactose intolerance symptoms for the most part can be avoided by eliminating milk and dairy products from your daily diet. As mentioned above, if you are experiencing symptoms of intolerance, first consult your doctor or dietician who will be able to advise you around which is the best treatment your personal circumstances
